View over Hong Kong, from the PolyU Innovation Tower
Hong Kong skyline, near the Space Museum
Between the 20th and 24th of April, two of our Tamk Media and Arts lecturers - Howell Istance and I, Carita Forsgren - went to visit Hong Kong. (Yes, the city, not the Finnish hardware and various items store by the same name.) We were there by the generous invitation of the University of Tampere, Centre for Practice as Research inTheatre. Thank you also for being such nice travel companions, Riku Roihankorpi and Maria Salomaa! What a pity that Jaakko Lenni-Taattola was not able to join us, due to attending another conference.

Here's what the CPRP has published in their blog.

Howell Istance, Riku Roihankorpi and Maria Salomaa: our first evening in Hong Kong

Riku tries out a student installation work at the
Innovation Tower, HK PolyU
Maria and Howell at the
Happy Valley horse races
So, what did we do in Hong Kong, except going to the Happy Valley horseraces, the Nan Lian gardens & Chi Lin Nunnery, street shopping at the Ladies' Market and other places, hiking on the Dragon's Back and seeing interesting museums? (It was Maria and Howell who went to hike the Dragon's Back, and Riku and I who rather hiked in the History and Space Museums.)

Well, we did manage to get some work done, no small thanks to Hanna Wirman and her colleagues at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University,PolyU Design.

"Dr Hanna Wirman teaches and coordinates the Game Development stream of MSc in Multimedia & Entertainment Technology and supervises game design projects, often with a focus on social responsibility and innovation. She leads educational game research projects working closely with the local community and NGOs in Hong Kong."

We had some dim sum at the staff restaurant
(and learnt real quickly how to use chopsticks)
Among the interesting people we met were also Ida Kathrine Jørgensen (Hong Kong PolyU), Olli Leino (City University of Hong Kong), Simon Niedenthal (Malmo University), Kaneda Yasuhiro, and many others.

From our meetings grew an idea; it's too early yet to start explaining it here, but we all were pretty excited about the possibilities for mutual collaboration towards one goal. I - and all of us - hope that the seed we planted will grow into a fine tree that stretches its limbs between the continents. Ah, maybe I've already revealed too much... But stay tuned - there will be interesting opportunities for students to do fun projects and workshops!

The team of three
Deadline was met with photopool-project last Friday in Hämeenlinna. Photopool is an app that was introduced at ITK-fair which is focused in interactive methods of education .

Development started after the original concept by Tuomo Joronen, a lecturer at Degree Programme in Media. Group of three, Tuomo, Chrystal, student at Interactive Programme in Media and Mika, student at Computer Sciences welcome you to try the app which you can download at: www.photopool.fi. Currently there is an android version only.

Most of the development process occurred during the summer of 2014 and slowly but surely the app was finetuned into a deliverable by the fair.

Find more information of the fair at: http://www.itk.fi/2015/info/english

Dear applicants, as you very well know, the entrance exams are approaching, and here you'll find some useful info that will help you having a smoother experience during these already tense days.

HOW TO GET HERE:

Take buses 8 or 17 from rautatieasema or keskustori, and stop in Mediapolis. Buses go quite frequently, and if you need to check the timetable you can use TKL's Journey Planner

Once you are at the bus stop, go on your right, where the Mediapolis sign is visible

Just follow that road until the end

Then, you'll find Mediapolises main entrance on your left

You'll find the registration desk in our main lobby

And after you have been registering, you will hear a welcome speech from our Head of Studies, Timo Kivikangas, in our orange lobby, which will also be an info point throughout the whole exam.
More infos about the exams will be given directly to each applicant once you are here; but if you are in need remember that the tutors are there to help you(they'll wear a TAMK t-shirt, so they'll be easily recognizable)

LUNCH:

Our cafeteria will be open from 11 to 14. Please note, if you don't have a student card already the lunch will be 6.50 euros, while with the student card  you'll pay 2.60 euros.
However, we also have microwaves and kettles in the second floor, so you can also warm up your food there, if you so wish.
Note that Mediapolis is located in Tohloppi, and there are no restaurants or supermarkets around; there is a valintatalo supermarket in Epilä but you'll need to walk 15-20 minutes to get there.
We have a kiosk which is open until 15.00, so if you have to be here longer than that consider bringing some snacks with you.

We all know how stressing and tense those days can be, but just be creative and give all your efforts and everything will be fine.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL and see you next week!
